The Importance of Nut-Free Snacks

Did you know that 32 million people in the U.S. have food allergies, including 1 in 13 children? Of that number, peanut and tree-nut allergies are two of the most common types. Allergies are a serious – and often life threatening – concern for many.

When it comes to children, parents are faced with the constant worry that they’ll be exposed to allergens outside of their home environment – whether it’s a friend with a peanut butter sandwich or a snack at school unknowingly containing nuts. To ensure the safety of all children, schools face added pressure to maintain a nut-free environment, and fellow students and parents are expected to adhere to food guidelines when sending meals or snacks to school.

An important step to ensuring foods are nut-free and uncontaminated by nut products during the manufacturing process is closely reading labels. This includes checking ingredients for nuts and looking for statements like: “may contain tree nuts” or “produced on shared equipment with tree nuts or peanuts.”
